Information about my work:
Mosaics
Most pieces are made of tiles that are hand painted and fired. Pieces can be uniquely painted, arranged and incorporated to create a variety of artistic expressions. Examples include: birdhouses, birdbaths, frames, pots, back-splashes, murals, tables, umbrella stands, mirrors, clocks, house number signs and benches. All outdoor pieces are sealed for their protection. There are a wide variety of tile colors, grout colors and cement stain choices to suit your individual needs. What I truly enjoy most is to create pieces that best suite your individual needs. I would gladly accommodate your needs by visiting you in your home or relying on pictures, fabrics, wallpaper samples and/or color swatches in order to create your personalized pieces. The possibilities are limitless. Custom orders can also take on a theme of their own with the incorporation of personal treasures, seashells, rocks, iron pieces, marbles and recycled glass. My goal is to look at your existing décor and use my own artistic representation to create a one of a kind piece that is individual in thought, design and creation.
Metal Sculptures
Metal continues to fascinate me with its durability, malleability and reflective properties. Forging allows me the ability to achieve bends, twists and scrolls, lending towards a very whimsical approach to design. Whether it is a functional piece such as a frame, trellis or table, or a more non-functional form such as a wall hanging or freestanding sculpture….the effect of metal continues to fascinate me. Finishes can range from a polished clear-coated steel, lending towards a more contemporary feel, to an acid treatment, which results in a rustic impression. In addition, there are rainbows of colors that can also be used or the ultimate form of protection…a powder coated enamel. My wall treatments at Head West Salon continue to also bring in clients that want to achieve a similar contemporary, yet rustic look. Wall treatments with metal in either an acid treated or polished steel give walls a life of their own. In addition, affirmations and spiritual reminders can also be replicated in the form of metal words that can be installed and add a personal touch and message to any room.
Fused Glass
If you haven’t had the opportunity to view the beauty of fused glass, you owe it to yourself to familiarize yourself with this playful world of incredible color and texture. It is hard to say what I enjoy most…the mixing of mosaics with metal or fused glass with metal. Both result in a balance of softness with durability. The heating process allows colors to layer, one on top of another, and results in a very clean and smooth mixing of light. With a multitude of colors to choose from and the ability to dramatize the effect with the reflective rainbow sheen of iridized glass and metallic depth of dichroic glass…the result is simplistic beauty. Glass continues to fascinate me and I am currently pursuing the art of jewelry making, as I find myself wanting to wear these adornments and keep them with me through out the day.
Paintings
The freedom that I experience going from a 4”X 4” tile to a 3’ by 4’ canvas is indescribable. Painting to me has now become the ultimate act of uncontrolled expression. Without an agenda in mind, only a selected focal point, I allow the images and feelings to pour out of me onto the canvas. Meditation, prayer, laughter, tears and anger are the tools that I use to help this process. The story unfolds, one color and one image at a time, until the labor has resulted in the birth of a child. It is a love making of sorts, one that results in an incredible bond between the canvas and myself. Although I find observers wanting the inside story behind the images that they are viewing…I find it most enjoyable to hear their interpretation of the images and the way the work makes them feel. Although it comes from me, these paintings are merely a mirror for anyone to look into, discover and reveal what is really their own personal reflection.
